An image can help draw attention to something you want people to see on a web page, e.g., the Sign-up box on your Opt-In Page.

To do this, you need to Find the right image and then Insert it in the right place. But first you have to download the image and sometimes Edit it, e.g., change the direction of an arrow from left to right, or up to down, etc.

Size Matters

But before you insert it, you need to check the size of the image. If the file size of the image is too large, then the web page may load slowly. Also a large image placed too close to the top of the web page may reduce the amount of text (characters) that Google, or the other search engines, index on your web page, which could make your page less findable in web searches.

A quick way to get a smaller image is to simply take a screen shot of the image.

Copyrights, etc.

Also, you'll want to be sure that the image you choose isn't copyrighted or protected from commercial use. To assure this, use a source of Royalty Free images. According to the Stock Photography website ""Royalty Free" is a type of a stock photo license that provides for the unlimited use of a photo in any media defined in the licensing terms."

Note that Royalty Free does not mean "Free" (as in no charge).

Free (and Fee) Image - Sources

For Free/no charge images you can use:
For very low cost (and some Free) quality images we recommend:

Action Steps

  • Find the right image, like a blue arrow pointing right (as an Example).

  • Go to http://sxc.hu/ and search for "arrow right" (without the quotes)

    • Click on the "Shiny Blue Arrow"

      • View the image license and assure that it's ok to use for your purposes.

  • Look at the size of the image.

    • If the size of the image is large, take a screen shot of the image* (since it's Royalty Free and Free/no charge anyway) and Save it to your desktop or hard drive.

    • If the size of the image is small, download the image (by clicking on the Download button).

      • Note1: Large would be anything larger than about 25,000 characters, or 25k.

      • Note2: We use SnagIt by Techsmith, but if you don't have SnagIt and you need a free screen shot program you can use Jing, by Techsmith.

  • After Saving the image, find it on your desktop or hard drive.

    • For PCs, you can use right-click on the Start button and choose Explore.

    • Then look in the area/folder you saved the image in (E.g., Desktop or My Documents).

  • Then double-click on the file name of the image and it should be brought up in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

    • Note: If Windows Picture and Fax Viewer doesn't automatically come up, you can go to:

      • Start > My Pictures and then navigate to the folder you saved the image in.

  • Once you're viewing your image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, then you can click press <Ctrl> & E (to edit the image), or look at the icons below and choose the Editing button (looks like a photo with a pencil over it).

  • When you're in the Editing program, click on:

    • Image > Flip/Rotate > Rotate by Angle.

  • Choose 90 degrees.

  • Then hit OK.

  • Repeat this process until you get the arrow you want and then:

  • Save the file (with a new name, e.g., BlueArrow-Right.gif).

Now you have the Arrow image you need.
