This article shows how to easily upload a file to your website's server.

It's easy to download files, but after you download what you need (e.g., the image of a right-arrow) how do you upload, or transfer, it to your website so you can link to it from there?

  • Note: You may need to contact your website hosting company, or consult the information they supplied you, so you'll have the information you'll need to make this an easy process.  See below for what you'll need to ask, or look, for.

When you upload a file, it is being FTP'ed to your website server. "FTP" just means "File Transfer Protocol" and it is the simplest way to exchange files between computers and the Internet.

This should be an easy straightforward process.  Sometimes the toughest part of the proces can be just getting the right info you need from your website hosting company.
  • To make it easy for your web hosting company, just tell them that you want the FTP information for your site (the Host/IP/URL and password).

Action Steps

  1. Contact your Website Hosting company and request the information mentioned in Step #2 below.

  2. Download and install the free uploading software: Core FTP: Core FTP LE 2.1

    1. Note: For the installation you'll need this information:

      1. Site Name (.e.g., IncreaseOnlineProfits)

      1. Host/IP/URL (e.g., xx.xxx.xxx.xx, where the x's are numbers)

      1. Password

  3. Open Core FTP

  4. In the Left panel (representing the files and folders on your hard drive):

    1. Locate the file you want to upload, e.g., ShinyBlueArrowRight.gif

  5. In the Right panel (representing your website's server):

    1. Locate the folder you want to upload the file to, e.g., .../public/images/

  6. Left-Click on the file you want to upload in the left panel

  7. Then click the small blue arrow (pointing right) on the top of the left panel

    1. Note: If you wait some time, you may need to "Reconnect"

      1. This if the button with two small blue arrows pointing back & forth (see image below).

        1.

  8. Then the file will be transferred to your website host's server.

  9. After the transfer has completed, it's always a great idea to confirm that the file is on your website's server.

    1. To do this, click on "Date" in the Date column in the right-hand panel a couple of times and you should see your newly uploaded file displayed at the top of the files/foloders.

    2. Of course the ultimate test is to try the full URL link to the file and see if it works, e.g.,

      1. http://www.increaseonlineprofits.com/public/images/ShinyBlueArrowRight.gif

        1. Note: You can try the link by copying it into the URL address field in a browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Firefox), email, HTML editing program like KompoZer
