Twitter: Overview and What it is
Karl Kasca
Posting
to Twitter is one of the quickest ways to attract people to
your
website or business, but you have to use it frequently and do it the
right way. Here's a description of what Twitter is and why you should
be using it. Note: See the "How to Get Started With Twitter" if you
want to jump in right away (but be sure to come back to this article
later).

you become a "power user" of Twitter so you can help your business the
most by using Twitter strategically.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a 140-character
microblog (very small web log) where you post messages
called "Tweets".
- Digital media consultant, Alan Wolk, calls Twitter "life-sharing", as
opposed to "microblogging".
These Tweets answer the question: "What
are you doing?".
Are you serious about this - can Twitter really help my
business?
Absolutely: "Yes!"
Social Proof: If all of these companies/businesses/entities are using
Twitter, it must
have value:

How often
should I Tweet?
Ideally
you should post at least once a day to Twitter - preferably more. But
if you're pressed for time, try to post/tweet at least once daily. And
even if you can't post daily, it still has value to tweet when you can.
What is the
basic strategy of using Twitter?
- Followers:
Basically you want to use Twitter to connect with a number of people
who are interested enough in what you have to say that they'll "Follow"
you. They follow you by clicking the "Follow" button under your photo.
By following you, they'll receive your Tweets (posts/messages) on their
Twitter Home Pages.
- Following:
Also, you want to follow a number of people whose tweets you're
interested in.
- And/or
you can follow other people with large followings of people, some who
are well-known enough to be called "luminaries". Sending people with
large followings Tweets prompts some of their followers to check you
out and follow you if they think you're interesting.
- -->
If people think you're interesting enough they may be attracted to your
blog and/or your website.
- Auto-follow:
So when people follow you, you follow them automatically.
Most important thing about
Twitter: The
more you use it, the more effective it will be for you.
I seem to pick up at least one follower (usually more) with every tweet.
What do you
Tweet about?
- Don't Tweet about your business (what service or product
you're selling) - that's too obvious.
- Do Tweet about what you're up to with your business, e.g., "What are you doing now?"
- Also have informative Tweets, like Guy
Kawasaki (also see his Twitter strategies in the Resources
below).
- Guy Kawasaki has over 61,000 followers so he must be
doing something right!
- Provide
value with your tweets -- Don't you want to know about valuable things?
So do your followers and people who might find you.
- Don't tell
people you're doing your laundry unless it connects with your business,
industry, or has some informative value, or special interest.
- Provide links to websites in your tweets. People love to
check things out and find new interesting things.
