Tip of the Week-

Beginning with this issue, you'll be receiving a new tip each week that will help you improve your online business.

I just finished reading a brilliant book, The Perfection of Marketing by James Connor, a leading brand expert. It's written in an easy, narrative style that let's you hear the exact advice he's given to over 200 CEOs on the most efficient methods to build their brands and increase their ROI.

My biggest take-away was this: There is too much information out there and if people don't quickly understand what you stand for, you won't break through. The company that makes it simple, who communicates one idea, will win.

How do you find that one idea? Have an outsider call 20-30 of your clients and ask them why they purchased from you. Ask them what your company stands for. If you get a consensus, then you know your one idea or as James Connor calls it, your "Sales Moment," and you build all of your marketing and advertising around that.

Who is Rick?

Ever since I was a teenager, I wanted to work for myself. I became an art dealer in my 20's and later, a business broker.

In 1994 I purchased a residential rental listing service which I sold in 2000 to Cendant Corp., a Fortune 150 company.

Since then, I formed a company that purchased apparel overstock from the parent of Macy's and Bloomingdale's and sold the clothing at fundraisers for charitable organizations. (I swore after the art business that I'd never deal with inventory again- should have taken my own advice). Now, here we are with IOP.

I'm married with 3 grown kids (finally) and I try to live by two credos- 1) Treat people the way you'd like to be treated and 2) Make your word count.
