Tip of the Week-

Did you know that you can search Craig's List just like a Database?

Well you can.  There are several reasons you might want to do this.  For instance, finding new ways to sell your products or services, seeing what your competitors are up to (especially the competitors you don't even know about), seeing what talent is available in particular locations (or nationwide), seeing how others phrase their job listings to find quality talent.

The secret to doing this is using a Google "site search" which focuses on just the Craig's List website.

For instance, the Craig's list website for Los Angeles is: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/.

To search the Craig's list site you use this search in Google: site:losangeles.craigslist.org.

Note that these look about the same, except  "site:" is before "losangeles...".

Then all you have to do is add some search words, or terms, that you'd like to find.

For instance, if you're in the "wine accessory" business, you could search for:

Note: Placing quotation marks around the phrase "wine accessories" makes your search a lot stronger.  We'll have more about how this works in an upcoming Article on our IOP site.

And if you'd like to search for "wine accessories" Nationwide, you just put an asterisk instead of "losangeles":

To make all of this a lot easier you can download and use the Google Toolbar:

Then just go to the Craig's List website, insert your search words/terms (e.g., "wine accessories") into the Google Toolbar search box and click on the magnifying lens with the eyeballs on the right side of the search box. What's cool about this is that the Google Toolbar will automatically insert the weird-looking "site:" info above, so you don't need to worry about it.

And "no worries" if this doesn't make complete sense yet, we'll be showing you how to do this in an upcoming article too.  :)

By the way, our "How To Navigate a Web Page - Quickly & Easily" article shows another use of the Google Toolbar (an invaluable tool that we use all the time).

Who is Karl?

I grew up in Napa, California, the wine country (see the "wine accessories" example below).

I loved reading anything I could get my hands on, the more diverse the subject, the better. I went to Cal Berkeley and got a degree in Math for Teachers and a Math Teaching Credential.

After teaching Math for a year, and finding that I wasn't going to save the world (at least by teaching middle school), I decided to switch to Business and spent 1-1/2 years in Marketing for Unocal, an energy resources (Big Oil) company.

At the end of that time, I was training Sales Representatives.  Then, one night they put me into Internal Auditing, because they needed a warm body, I mean highly qualified individual, with good "number sense." I spent a number of years there and saw the field develop from a "gotcha mentality" to a highly valued management consulting service which I really enjoyed. I also trained other auditors.

But what I really enjoyed, was learning where valuable information could be found within the internal databases of the company. This was really useful for Fraud and Conflict-of-Interest Examinations.

After Unocal sold the downstream petroleum side of their business, which was my specialty, I was downsized. However, by that time, I had found out about many other extremely powerful databases like LexisNexis and Dialog.  Since I was already proficient in using the Internet, I became an expert in finding exactly what I was seeking.

I formed an information research company, Kasca & Associates, which specialized in market research and competitive intelligence, and began speaking on the topic, "How to Know Anything at Anytime in 10 Minutes or Less".

Then my long-time friend, Rick Henkin, entered the picture and invited me to partner with him in a web business.

After some initial market research we found that there was a great need and demand for information by website owners wishing to attract more visitors and create more customers.  I became an expert in the "attraction" side of this equation, including SEO (Search Engine Optimization), E-Marketing, and Social Media.

At this point, I had been teaching Competitive Marketing & Strategy and Global Marketing at UCLA Extension for some time, but began to teach E-Marketing, Social Media Marketing and New Media Marketing as well.

I've been a seeker and transmitter (teacher) of knowledge my whole life, and can now say that I'm an expert in showing people both how to find exactly what they're seeking on the Internet, as well as showing website owners how their businesses can be found on the Internet, closing the circle of seeking and being found.

The most precious people in my life are my wife, Milen and my two "kids", who just happen to be bunny rabbits.

My favorite hobbies are surfing the net, connecting with people on Social Media sites, finding and using new technology, listening to podcasts at the gym, and teaching at UCLA Extension.

New articles for Members this week:

Copy and Paste (on Steroids!)- This is a quick tutorial on how to Copy and Paste. But this isn't just the usual Copy and Paste commands.  This article will show you how to clear all formatting when copying and pasting.  Also, I'll show you a great little free utility which helps to do this...with the click of a button (or two)!  Clearing formatting is really helpful when you don't want other people's formatting like Bold, Italics, Underlining, Fonts/Font Sizes, Links to URLs, etc. to be in the document you're copying the information to.  Also this is absolutely critical if you're using information from a document in Microsoft Word, Publisher, etc. or a PDF file and copying it into an HTML editing program  for a webpage or for your eNewsletter in an email marketing service like aWeber, Constant Contact, iContact, etc... log in to read more

Persuasion and Influence Part 4: Social Proof Principle- We will do what others have done or are doing in a given situation. The more people taking a specific action, the more likely it is to be seen as the correct action to take, especially when we're not sure what to do...log in to read more

Persuasion and Influence Part 5: Liking Principle- We are more likely to say "yes" to people we like or with whom we want to identify. That seems to be a pretty obvious statement. Unless we have to, none of us "wants" to do business with people we dislike. Consequently we are marketed to all of the time by people who try to get us to like them or show how similar they are to us...log in to read more

How to Navigate a Web Page-Quickly and Easily- Getting around a web page quickly and easily will save you a lot of time and effort, not to mention making you a lot better at finding what you need.  Using some choice keyboard shortcuts as well as the Google Toolbar will have you finding things on web pages in no time.  Also, the keyboard shortcuts work in almost all other documents you use on a daily basis (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) making you more efficient in almost everything you do on your computer...log in to read more
