Google has a tool called Insights for Search which helps online businesses find trends in the way people search on the search engines which you can then apply to your own marketing campaigns.
 
It allows you to compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and other Google properties.
 
You can see what the top category based keywords and hottest rising searches are. Insights for Search even provides a visual representation of regional interest on a map.
 
A good example of how this tool can be used is shown in this YouTube video.
