Our IncreaseOnlineProfits.com website redesign is 98% complete with just a few tweaks remaining. It's taken a long time, but Karl and I wanted the site to be easy to use, easy to understand and easy for you to find the exact information that you might need right now.
Besides a new look, you'll find:
- A new Article Index which allows you to easily search for specific topics that are important to you
- A new IOP Insider News Archive department so that you can find Tips of the Week that you might have missed
- A Quick Power Tips department which is designed to give your website an immediate boost in traffic and conversions
- A Members Profile department where you can post information about yourself, your websites and your social network pages. You can also upload photos and videos, create your own blog and leave notes for other members
We all want to make the most of our online businesses. Karl and I are committed to giving you the most valuable and current information available so that your website will be as successful as you want it to be. We also hope that through our discussion forums and the networking aspect of our site, that you will learn from and help each other.
As Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich said, "Success in this world is always a matter of individual effort, yet you will only be deceiving yourself if you believe that you can succeed without the co-operation of other people.
Tip of the Week
Low Cost Usability Testing- Usability is a critical aspect to the success of your website. According to Jakob Nielsenusability is important because "if a website is difficult to use, people leave. If the homepage fails to clearly state what a company offers and what users can do on the site, people leave. If users get lost on a website, they leave. If a website's information is hard to read or doesn't answer users' key questions, they leave. Note a pattern here? There's no such thing as a user reading a website manual or otherwise spending much time trying to figure out an interface. There are plenty of other websites available; leaving is the first line of defense when users encounter a difficulty.
You'll find articles on Usability on the IncreaseOnlineProfits.com website with more to come. Interestingly, I came across this website, Usertesting.com, which promises that for $29 you get a video of a user speaking their thoughts as they browse your website and a written summary of the problems they found. The site has received accolades from a whole host of websites including CNNMoney, MSN, Amazon, Mashable, Twitter and others.
Basically, you sign up, specifying who your target audience is, how many users you want and what task you want them to perform. You don't ask people the question, "What do you think about this?," you give them a task to perform and see how easy and intuitive (or not) your interface is. Their users are normal people who are pre-screened and rated by the customers.
They say you usually start getting results within one hour. You find out what the users liked, what they didn't like and what would have caused them to leave your site.
I think it's a good starting point. All of us who have websites are too acquainted with them. Because we understand how everything works and what every word means, we don't see how any one else could not have the same understanding.
I think websites like Usertesting.com serve a very good purpose, they get you to start looking at your website from your customer's perspective and to start thinking like them. The one caveat I'd make is that the ultimate value of any user testing lies within the interpretation and subsequent design changes resulting from those tests.
