Tip of the Week: What if you were Locked out of your Google accounts or Twitter?

Google: Locked out of your Google accounts

What if you were locked out of your Google accounts?  Yes, what if you were locked out of all of your Google accounts and couldn't access: Gmail (and your contacts), Google Calendar, Google Docs, Blogger/Blogspot, YouTube, Picasa (photos), iGoogle, etc.  Pretty unimaginable.

These days being locked out of Google sounds like the end of the world and yet it can happen.

Well, if it does happen you can go to Google Accounts Help for "I can't access my account" and tell them as much as you can remember about your account:
http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/request.py?ctx=accounts_hc&contact_type=ara

And you better have a great memory, since they're asking you what date you created your account and various Google accounts.

No problem, you can just search for the "Welcome" emails, right?  But remember you can't access your Gmail account either.

TIP #1: So this is one situation when running your emails through Outlook where they can be stored in an Outlook file and found at a later time might actually be an advantage.

TIP #2: Or better yet, you could look up these bits of information now...before you get locked out...and just store the info in a file or in a print-up...just in case the worst happens.

Note: This hasn't happened to me yet, but it did using Twitter...

Twitter: Locked out of Twitter account

In last week's Tip Karl mentioned that his Twitter account was phished/hacked and what he had to do to clear his cache and reset his password:
http://www.increaseonlineprofits.com/public/301.cfm

All was fine at that point, but then when going back into Twitter the new password didn't work - yikes!

Then Twitter asked for my phone number to confirm my account.  The only problem was that Twitter wouldn't accept any phone number I have (in any form, e.g. using "+1", etc.) as my phone number.

Apparently the phisher/hacker changed my phone number, or Twitter has an awful glitch.

TIP #1: Look up your Twitter account info, assure that it's correct (your info!), and save/store it.

TIP #2: And if the worst happens and you're completely locked out, you can try contacting Twitter Support:
support@twitter.zendesk.com (note the "zendesk" after Twitter).

But so far I've been stuck in an infinite loop of confirming my info:  user name, email address, phone number, and any other identifying information you may have:

-Welcome email with start date of the account
-Any notifications you've recently received (follow, direct message, etc.)
-A list of a few friends you've recently direct messaged, or who've recently messaged you
-An old IM address you verified, if you had an account when Twitter allowed updating via IM
-Your phone number, if it was every attached to your Twitter account
-This information help us confirm the true identity of the account owner.

TIP #3: So check your account settings *before* anything happens to your account!

Facebook: Update on Karl's friend whose Facebook account was hacked
Finally she gave up and created a new Facebook account - yikes!

TIP: Again, please take precautionary measures and store your original account info.  For instance you could save the web page to your hard drive, or print it (to paper and/or as a PDF file).

Bottom Line

TIP: Check all of your social media accounts and assure: 1) That your user info is correct (e.g., your phone number, since Twitter uses it as a confirmation) and 2) Store or print out your account set-up info.  And "just in case", you could look-up and store/print the welcome emails for all of your social media accounts (and Google accounts) and save them in a safe place.

Yahoo and Age: And just in case you need to access your Yahoo account info, be sure you entered your correct age, or you'll have a tough time getting into your account again.  So either use your correct age, or carefully document and save what you entered.  And this goes for all of your registration info, just in case the sites decide to change the info they're using for confirmation purposes.  Which theoretically is to protect your account from being hacked.
