Tip of the Week- Facebook Privacy Settings- Be Sure You Review Yours...NOW!
We strongly recommend that you view and then adjust your privacy settings to your comfort level, otherwise the generic defaults provided by Facebook will allow much of your Facebook info to be:
- Viewed by by "Everyone" and
- Indexed by Google (and other search engines) - which will allow your Facebook info to be "found" by everyone.
If these settings don't give you a warm and cozy feeling inside then log into Facebook, and click on: Settings > Privacy Settings and look at each of the areas of your settings and set them as you wish.
If you're marketing your business as well as using Facebook personally, you'll want to scrutinize each area: Profile Information, Contact Information, Applications and Websites, Search, and Block List. As marketers we probably want to make many of our posts/updates available, but perhaps you don't want the world to see your photos or religious/political views as well (it's your choice).
If you haven't logged into Facebook for awhile you'll be shown a screen with the new generic privacy settings. You can change any of these, but more importantly (even if you do change the general settings), please be sure to visit Settings > Privacy Settings to assure each specific setting fits your wishes for the World to see...or not see.
The problem with the new generic settings is not only that they default to "Everyone", but the other option is "Old Settings"...and how many of us actually remember our Old Settings? I looked at mine and was surprised that some Old Settings were actually set to "Everyone".
Best approach: Do this now, while you're thinking about it. You can always go back and change your settings later, but once Google starts indexing your info, it may be available in "Cached" (stored) views...so best to do this right away!
