Tip of the Week

Whether you're already participating in social media or not, Google has taken that decision out of your hands . They've just launched Google SideWiki, which allows anyone to comment on your website, at your website, for everyone to see.

It's a new browser sidebar that's free. Anyone who has subscribed to it can read and write comments alongside any web page.

Basically, it means that your customers will be able to comment on your products, services, policies or what-have-you and others will be able to see those comments. You're going to need to monitor those conversations and develop policies for responding to and influencing the discussion.

To me, the best defense (and I don't mean that in a us vs. them way) is to join the conversation, answer questions, fix problems, and change things that might not be working. I've always believed that if you ask, your customers will tell you exactly what you need to do to be successful.

Unfortunately, most of the time, we don't ask and when we do, our customers might not be completely honest with us. But with this Google SideWiki, you're not going to have to ask.

I don't have any idea how exactly it's all going to play out, but in the meantime, look at it as a positive. Hopefully, you'll get some real meaningful feedback from your visitors and customers.

Right now, Google SideWiki is up and running on Internet Explorer and Firefox  and will be available on Google Chrome shortly.
