Tip of the Week

Facebook is not just for friends anymore. More and more businesses are using Facebook fan pages to connect with their customers and increase their sales.

In today's Los Angeles Times, there was an article entitled "Facebook becoming a friend of small businesses" that featured a cupcake company called Sprinkles. While the owner does not have a personal Facebook page, he has a company fan page.

"On Facebook, we can ask our customers what's the next location they want or what do you think of our next flavor?" says Charles Nelson, President of Sprinkles cupcakes. To further interact with their customers and keep them coming back, each day Sprinkles announces a secret word on its fan page and the first 25 or 50 people to show up at any of its five stores and whisper that word, get a free cupcake.

Now I understand why I see a line outside of their Beverly Hills store whenever I drive by.

Creating a Facebook fan page for your business is completely free, just like creating a presence on MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn. Not only is it free, but most of the larger social networking sites are becoming interconnected. This means that a status update on Facebook becomes a "tweet" on Twitter. Even your blogs posts can be automatically announced on Facebook and Twitter, with more apps coming.

Ultimately, you have to go to where your customers hang out. Social media is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.
Get the most out of the time you put into your online business.
