Tip of the Week- How to Find Forums in Your Niche

One of the ways to reach your target audience is to go to the forums where "your people" hang out and participate in their conversations. I recently read an article on this topic at subhub.com and I'd like to share some of the points it made:

Benefits of Using Forums

  • You can network with people who share your interests
  • Get content ideas by seeing which topics attract the most interest
  • Find other potential content contributors
  • Drive traffic by putting links in your posts and signature
  • Find joint venture partners
  • Get back links to your site from the links in your post

How to find forums

According to the article's author, his first stop is to go to Big Boards.  Big Boards is a website directory listing the most active message boards on the web. According to the About page, "message boards may be ranked by post count, by members count or by post per  member ratio, using only recent (previous week) data, using alexa.com ranking system or by traffic for the boards which have included the big-boards trackers."

Another way to find relevant forums is simply go to the search engines like Google or Yahoo!, type in your keywords + forum. An example would be: albino black sheep + forum. Yes, there really are albino black sheep. Who knew?
Google search for: albino black sheep forum

What to do in the forums

Once you've found a forum with "your people," participate by asking and answering questions, offering helpful tips and advice. Eventually, the forum members will come to see you as an authority on the topic and will visit your site.  Don't overtly promote yourself or your products. Just link to your website or a free report in your signature.

If you've been offering valuable content to the forum members, they'll click through to find out more about you.

Watch it again to affirm your own decision to improve your website and online marketing efforts.

In the near future we'll be posting articles on the IOP site which show how you can make (or have made) a movie like this for your site too.
