Tip of the Week- 2 Quick Ways to See How Others View Your Website

Here at IncreaseOnlineProfits.com we always encourage website owners to view their sites from their customer's perspective.  This week we have 2 quick and easy ways to do that:
1) Screen Resolution Test and 2) Color Test.

1) Screen Resolution Test

Here's a test to see how much of your web page fits onto your computer screen at various resolutions:

Screen-Resolution.com

This is a graphical way to see how much content can be viewed "above the fold" (on the screen) without scrolling down.

The important thing to realize is that 20% of people still view websites at 1024x768 pixel resolution.*  While most people using higher resolutions see more content on their screens, people viewing at lower resolutions will miss seeing some of your information which simply doesn't fit onto their screens.
* Source: Browser Display Statistics

How to test your web pages:

- Just go to Screen-Resolution.com and copy and paste the full web address for one of your web pages in the black bar at the top.
- Then click the "Check Page" button on the right.
- After doing this, try clicking on various resolutions at the bottom of the page, e.g., 1024 x 768, 1280 x 800, etc.

Trick: If you use this Browser Display Statistics page, you can easily see how many years show on the page at one time at various resolutions.

Note: Screen-Resolution.com works best in Internet Explorer.

2) Color Test

This test shows how people with color-defective/blind vision view your web pages. Granted this only affects about 1 in 20 people, but it only takes a moment to see if/how your web pages appear to them.

Try Vischeck on a Webpage

And note that you can also check individual images/photos:

Try Vischeck on Your Image Files

How to test your web pages or images:

- Just go to one of the links above and insert the web address or browse for the file.
- Then click on the different "flavors" of color blindness and see how they appear:
    - Deuteranope (a form of red/green color deficit)
    - Protanope (another form of red/green color deficit)
    - Tritanope (a blue/yellow deficit- very rare)

FYI, Karl has "Protanope" vision.

Bonus: And if you're really intrigued by this you can try the Color Scheme Designer: - Click the "Vision Simulation" tab and see different color palettes for various types of color vision.
- Note: You may need to use Firefox's browser depending on what version of Internet Explorer you have installed.

Bottom Line:

When you design your web pages, keep in mind who your audience is and how much of your web content they can see.
