Tip of the Week- Recent Studies Say Keep Important Information Above the Fold

While it's true that viewers scroll, recent studies have shown that they spend 80% of their time looking at information above the fold and only 20% of their time, below the fold.

"Above the fold" refers to that section of a web page that is visible without scrolling.

Even though viewers scroll, there are 2 primary reasons why you shouldn't create endless pages:
  1. Limited attention span- people still prefer sites that get to the point quickly. Scrolling is work
  2. Real estate above the fold is more valuable in attracting and keeping user's attention than what's below the fold
However, according to usability expert, Jakob Nielsen, who conducted the study, if you have a long article, it's better to let people scroll all the way through it rather than divide it over several web pages. It's easier for users to scroll than have to decide whether or not to click through to the next page.

Bottom line:  Keep important information above the fold.
