Tip of the Week- Grammatical Errors May Cost You Customers

How many times have you seen a sentence like this: "Did you loose your keys?" rather than "Did you lose your keys?" Now, maybe your eye just ignored the extra "o" in loose, but the two words have very different meanings.  Loose means "free from confinement, not fixed, not  literal or exact", while lose means "to fail, to mislay, to be deprived of (something one has had)".

Other Common Grammatical Errors

Other  common grammatical and spelling errors include "It's vs. Its," "There vs. Their vs. They're," "Effect vs. Affect," "Lets vs. Let's," "Alot vs. A lot," "Everyday vs. Every day," "Were vs. We're," "Than vs. Then," "Accept vs. Except." "Who's vs. Whose," "Principle vs. Principal," "Assure vs. Insure," "Your vs. "You're,""Less vs. Fewer," etc.  The list goes on and on. While it's easy to misspell a word (and no excuse not to correct it), what effect does this have on the reader?

Possible Effects on Reader

In my opinion the reader thinks one of 4 things- If the website owner is this careless with easy-to-fix grammatical errors:
  1. How much attention will he pay to the details of his product or service?
  2. How much attention will he pay to servicing my account?
  3. Can I trust him with my credit card information?
  4. If he doesn't care, why should I?

Conclusion

The last thing you want is to leave it up to your customer to overcome his or her own objections.

Why help create these questions in the customer's mind at all, especially when you can easily  use a SpellChecker type program? And if you're not sure which of two similar sounding words you should be using, just do a Google search for "common grammatical errors" or check the dictionary.

Don't lose (not loose) a customer because of this potential credibility issue.
