Tip of the Week- Testing Web Pages- How to Sharpen Your Skills
It's important to always test the elements of your website, especially
your homepage and landing pages. Let's assume that your current
conversion rate is 2% (meaning that 2 of every 100 visitors ends up
taking the action you want them to take).
Now you test by changing a
headline, page element, placement of your call-to-action, etc. and your
conversion rate increases to 3% (3 out of every 100 visitors takes the
action you want them to take).
You can look at that and say,
"Big deal, so now 3 people instead of 2 people out of every 100 are
buying my ebook." But here's the thing: that's a 50% increase in
sales. And it didn't cost you anything. You didn't have to spend money
on ads or PPC or anything. All you did was test some elements on your
web pages and your income shot up 50%. What if your testing resulted in
4 or 5 sales instead of just 2? That's a phenomenal increase.
How do I know what to test?
For a while now, I've subscribed to a free newsletter published by Anne Holland, entitled WhichTestWon. Ms. Holland founded and later sold Marketing Sherpa, a company that uses case studies to research what works in marketing.
Each
week they have a Test of the Week in which they show you 2 versions of
a landing page or sales form or survey, etc. and you get to vote for
the version you think did the better job. After you submit your vote,
you can see the real-life test results and the reasonings as to why
that version was more effective than the other.
It's fun to see
how well you do, but more importantly, by understanding the reasons for
the winning version, you increase your own knowledge, which can then be
applied to your own website (sorry for the run-on sentence).
