Tip of the Week- Is Your Homepage Hurting Your Conversions?
 
This week's tip is a short but very important one.

The purpose of your homepage is to guide people to other more important pages on your website, pages that can impact your bottom line. The sooner you help your visitor find what they're looking for, the more likely they'll accomplish your goal for them. By "your goal for them," I mean a purchase, sign-up, download, registration or whatever it may be.

How many times have you been on a  website and it's cluttered with information? Everything on it is screaming for your attention. Because that company is trying to emphasize everything they offer, (figuring if they don't, you'll miss it), what usually ends up happening? Their worst nightmare comes to pass, you leave.

By trying to emphasize everything, nothing on the page seems that important. This holds true not only with text but with graphics as well. The simpler, the better. More is less is really true when it comes to your page design.

By continually scraping your homepage or any of your pages for that matter, of unnecessary words and images, you can help your visitor get to the heart of your message. And they will appreciate the time you've saved them.

I read a quote once by Jakob Nielsen, who is considered one of the world's leading usability experts, that you should cut your words in half, and then cut them in half again. Try it and see how much more your visitors appreciate your effort.
