I just watched a video interview with Bryan Eisenberg, who is a recognized authority in online marketing and improving conversion rates.

In this 5 minute interview he discussed 3 "secrets" that top converting e-commerce websites use:

  1. They communicate their unique value- these websites immediately let you know why you should be doing business with them and not their competitors. Their value proposition is communicated on every page, not just their homepage, especially as visitors might enter through internal pages. He mentioned VitaCost, GoToMeeting, MailChimp, and L.L. Bean as examples of websites that do this well.

  2. They are data driven- these websites make decisions based on their site metrics and analytics. Whether they use Google Analytics or a paid service, the successful e-commerce websites don't just skim these reports, they make changes and improvements based on the information provided.

  3. They use the voice of their customer in their business- these websites use the terms that their customers use in product descriptions and category groupings. They also use customer reviews and ratings, and letters of recommendation which are often obtainable from social media.
