Tip of the Week- 7 No-nos of Social Networks

There was an article in the Los Angeles Times today entitled, "Seven No-nos of Social Networks."

A Consumer Reports survey found that more than half of adults who use social networks post information that puts them at risk for identity theft and other cyber crimes.

The Seven No-nos
  1. A weak password- mix and use upper & lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Stay away from simple words that can be found in a dictionary

  2. Full birth date- If you're going to show anything, show only the month and day. The full birthday makes it easier for the bad guys to obtain other information about you

  3. Privacy controls- most social networks allow you to limit some of the information that is publicly available. At the least, leave out phone numbers and home addresses

  4. A child's name in a caption- don't use a child's name in  photo tags or captions. If other people use your child's name in their captions, delete it by clicking "Remove Tag"

  5. Being away from home- don't post the dates that you'll be away from home

  6. Found by search engines-  on Facebook- click on My Account, go to Privacy Settings, then go to Search. Select "Only Friends" in the Facebook Search Results and make sure Public Search Results is unchecked

  7. Children using Facebook unsupervised- Consumer reports suggests that if you have a young child or teenager who uses Facebook, you should become one of their online friends and use their email as the contact for the account to receive notification and monitor activity
Everyone has to decide for themselves how much personal information they are willing to make public. Unfortunately, there are people who are not our friends, who are too willing to use your information for their own purposes.

Like most things in life, "caveat emptor" ("let the buyer beware") applies to our online life as well.
