Tip of the Week- 7 Ways to Monitor Your Online Reputation

Ever wonder what people are saying online about you or your company?  It's important to know, especially these days, considering how quickly information can travel.

As a website owner, you want to respond as quickly as possible to any negative information that's floating around. If people only hear one side of the story, without any contrasting viewpoint or factual data, they will tend to believe it.

There are many paid and free reputation monitoring tools available. Here is a list of 7 free tools you can use:

  1. Addictomatic- searches for the latest news, blog posts, videos and images on any topic . Monitors Twitter, Bing News, YouTube, Google Blog Search, Digg, Tweetmeme Links, Friendfeed, Ask.com News, Flickr, Yahoo!  Web Search, Truveo Video Search Wikio, Wordpress.com and others

  2. Boardtracker- Input your keywords and it searches discussion boards and forums, an arena that most monitoring tools leave out

  3. Google Alerts- receive email updates of the latest relevant Google results based on your choice of topic

  4. HowSociable?- measures your brand's visibility on the social web using 32 different metrics

  5. Social Mention- similar to Google Alerts in that you receive email alerts, but for social media

  6. Twitter Search- tracks real-time conversations using your keywords

  7. Yahoo! Sideline- monitors the Twitter public timeline in real-time and allows you to create and group custom queries by topics of interest

Hopefully, everything you find about yourself and your company is good and positive information. Unfortunately, there's always some disgruntled crackpot, with an ax to grind, that can really make your life miserable. Know what's being said, so that you can defend yourself if necessary.  As the saying goes, "forewarned is forearmed."
