Tip of the Week- 12 Tips to Get Coverage on Influential Blogs
One of the best ways to get in touch with "your" audience is to contact the people that already have their attention.
Did you know that when Universal Studios launched their new attraction, "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," they didn't
spend millions of dollars on TV spots, billboards, or magazine ads?
The woman in charge, Cindy Gordon, told just 7 people about the new
attraction. Those 7 people, who ran the top Harry Potter fan sites,
then told tens of 1000's.
The mainstream media heard those tens of
1000's and reported about the new attraction in newspaper and magazine
articles, TV and radio reports, and in blog posts. It was estimated
that eventually 350,000,000 around the world heard the news. All from
just telling 7 people.
A couple of months ago I read an article on the Subhub website entitled 12 Top Tips To Get You Coverage On the Most Influential Blogs. Here is the condensed version of those tips:
- Don't approach the traffic leaders, approach the thought leaders- since
everyone is trying to get mentioned on the blogs with the highest
traffic, go to the blogs those bloggers read, instead. You'll usually
find those listed on their site under the Blogroll
- Face-to-face contact is the least crowded channel- social media has actually made it harder to reach the "top" people. Sure, you can tweet them,
but will they read your message? Instead, try to find an event that
they're attending, (not as speakers), and your chances are much better
that you'll be able to speak with them
- Talk to the people associated with the leading blogs, not to the lead guy or woman- often the top blogs are run by a team. Try to build a relationship with a couple of the team members
- Prepare a story which is relevant to their audience- leading
bloggers really only care about providing valuable, relevant
information to their followers. If you can provide that, you stand a
much better chance of being listened to
- Prepare an FAQ- if
you do get to talk to the top dog, have a sheet prepared about your
product or service with answers to the most frequently asked questions
- Position yourself as part of a big trend- since they like to report on big trends, try to grab their attention by positioning yourself as part of a big trend
- Ask for an interview- ask
the thought leaders (Tip #1) for an interview. When you publish it, he
or she will probably link to it, which will most likely be seen by the
traffic leader
- Leave comments or be active in their forum- just make sure that your comments are helpful and constructive
- Regularly link to their articles- most top people are always looking to see who is linking to their site and driving traffic their way
- Nominate them for an award (and tell them about it)- if you find a relevant award that they could compete for, nominate them and let them know that you did so
- Offer to write some articles for free- most top bloggers have regular ghost writers
- Send free stuff- send them a report or ebook you've written, or a sample of your product
Unlike
paid advertising, a mention on a top blog will always be there. It
could be linked to by others, indexed by the search engines, or
re-reported. Make it part of your strategy and reap the benefits.
Good luck,
Rick and Karl
